This is going to make me seem like a really old ‘fuddy duddy’ but this is what I have been doing for the past year and a half every Thursday. This was my last night at knitting club, sad times and even though Nathan laughs at my hanging out with old people I rather like it. I don’t see them as old people but rather friends as I think I was born old.
Over the last year while doing my PGCE they have been people that I can talk to and share my hobbies with. Kay especially is so lovely and also works at a school which is probably why we get on so well. I admire each of these women for the things that they do; Mary is in here 70s and still works part time at a special needs school in Calne because she loves it she has a tattoo and stole a poodle from the circus. I have so much respect for Daphne as she has nursed her husband right up to his death and she has shown me what it really means to love a spouse. I love that Kay only works part time so she can pursue her hobbies, she makes the most fabulous quilts.
As knitters we meet at the library every Thursday but it is more than just the knitting that I go for. It is the company of these women that has kept me going for the last year as I completed my PGCE. They have some amazing life stories to tell and cakes to eat.
I remember when I was just sat there one evening studying and thinking about how difficult the move had been back to Bristol as I was worried I would not make any friends on this side of town. But I can say that I have met a group of beautiful women who care for their families and each other.
While we sit and string together a row of stitches we talk about what we deem important in our lives; we talk about families, marriage, religion, books our holidays and our hobbies.
So you see, I may be hanging out with a different generation but I have found a part of myself that only these women understand. I don’t think my knitting skills have improved over the last year but my ability to understand what matters most in life has be magnified by the love and care of these women
OMG I love this post and I love that you joined a knitting club. I used to knit way back in Sixth Form and have taught my sister and retaught myself over the summer as she has been having a tough time. Unfortunately I am limited to making 'scarfs', which translates to just knitting in long lines, so I think I will stick to cross stitch and embroidery instead!
